  Gracie

Sue, I think of you often (almost every time I look at my precious girls), and I pray for you and your family. I never saw the notice that you gave, but I read on the blog Mike and little Madison were doing good. I pray that's true.

Gracie and Mandie are sooooo much fun. I had to laugh at Drummer Boy's mom when she said she brushed him everyday and I think it was Cosby's mom who said how pretty, but she didn't have time. I remember when I had little ones at home and they took so much of my time that my cocker would get brushed once a week if she was lucky. Now I spend an hour or hour and half on floor brushing my girls while I'm watching TV or just want to be with my husband because he's watching golf every night. Not that they like it, when they see me get the brush they run. lol. What a blessing they are and so cute.

I didn't get to write when Gracie had her birthday in June, but I looked for some of
her brothers and sisters, but didn't see any. I wonder how Debbie and Geoff are doing with Yogi and Cooper, I think my girls are about the same age difference and those first months all I did was take potty breaks. Ha.

I'm going to try to send pictures, but who knows, just when I think I know it, something doesn't work. The first one is Mandie running the fence, it's is so funny and I want you to see it so bad. You just say go and off she goes with Gracie trying to catch up. Mandie is
still the boss. Gracie loves balls, and Mandie loves me (she is under my feet all the time) and just likes balls if Gracie is playing. Since I've never had two dogs at same time, it's amazing to me at the different personality, just like our kids. Each one is special. I just saw picture of Cubby Jr. and I think he's Gracie's brother. I used to see Toby and Archie, but haven't in awhile.

Decided to send pics of my little ones when they were little and 3rd is Mandie and 4th is Gracie (she has the longest eyelashes) Mandie's jealous and so am I.

So thankful for you and High Calling Cockers.

Susie, Gracie and Mandie

Note from Sue:

Gracie and Mandie are the two little munchkins featured in the title picture at the top of my blog.

Hi Susan,

I hope that everything is well with your family. It has been a while since I got in touch with you. Been a busy summer. Kodi and Duchess and Bristal are doing fine. They are really healthy and the most loving cockers in the world. They live to make us happy and are so loving. We enjoy their company so much. I will send a couple pics for you to see your babies.

Post about the 9-11 dogs featured below, from Sasha's mother~

Hi Susan.

Thank you for your kind wishes.

It is a privilege to be able to care for and prepare dear Sasha for her life as a "big girl". We are definitely blessed!
Every time there is a new litter of High Calling pups, I can't help but think of all the new love that has just been created!

I was very moved by the 9/11 photo tributes. I still get choked up when I think about it.

In Sept 2001 the daughter of a friend was very concerned about the paws of those courageous dogs as they searched through burning debris and ashes. Through her small company, Muttluks, she donated shoes to protect the dogs of 911.

Ground Zero - Muttluks Helps New York

Muttluks has long been known for its altruistic actions and integrity. In 2002, Marianne Bertrand, the founder of Muttluks, was awarded the “Be kind to Animals” Award by the Toronto Humane Society for Muttluks’ donation of over 850 sets of boots to the 300 Search and Rescue dogs at Ground Zero on 9/11. The Muttluks shipment to Ground Zero made history as it was the only item to cross the Canadian/US border on a day the border between the two countries was closed.

"Cosby" from Westville, Florida~

Good night Sue,

We are all getting ready for Hurricane Issac tonight!! We all had our baths, including Cosby's!! These pictures that I sent is just after his bath. I'm trying to play a game with Cosby tonight on my bed. While he's distracted playing with one of his squeaky toys, I start to brush him nice and quick and gentle with his ears. And when he's a good boy I give him a little treat. These pics show Cosby being impatient and wanting his snack!! I love these new bath products I used for the first time tonight! The groomer from Petsmart recommend what she used on her pet, making it last longer, it's called white citrus, ULTRA GLOW, by KONG in style. Also the Asian Pear, Magical Deodorizing Spray, by "I LOVE{heart} PET HEAD". Cosby's coat feels so soft and silky and smells like he just been professionally groomed!!...LOL

We pray tonight for our panhandle that everyone will be safe and secure. Caleb's school is closed tomorrow but should be open on Wed. Also, my church tonight is open for shelter tonight and tomorrow. My family is here at home, and we are prepared for any major things that might happen, like power being off for a day or more. We are expected to get tons of rain and heavy winds. I hope the rural carriers delivering the mail tomorrow will be fine and get back quick to the post office. Issac could be a category 2 by the time it hits landfall. It looks like it's heading toward Louisianna. Yaw keep us in your prayers, and will do the same for you!! God bless everyone and especially to all the High Calling Cocker Family!!!

In His care,

Sherry and Cosby

"911" Dogs Today~

Yes, I love cocker spaniels the very best, but the following dogs really touched me by reading about their service on September 11, 2001.

9/11 Dogs Today

Nearly 100 dogs worked at the trade center ten years ago; only 13 are left.

THESE OLD WONDERFUL FACES SAY IT ALL... These are the surviving dogs that worked the trade center that are still alive but retired, they are heroes too. Their eyes say everything you need to know about them. Just amazing creatures

True heroes of 9/11 still with us today

Abigail, above, was deployed on the evening of September 17, searching for 10 days

while Tuff arrived in New York at 11:00 pm on the day of attack to start working early the next day.

Bretagne and his owner Denise Corliss from Cypress, Texas, arrived at the site in New York

on September 17, remaining there for ten days

Guinness, 15, from Highland, California, started work at the site with Sheila McKee on

the morning of September 13 and was deployed at the site for 11 days.

Handler Julie Noyes and Hoke were deployed to the World Trade Center from their home in Denver

on September 24 and searched for five days.

Kaiser, 12, pictured at home in Indianapolis, Indiana, was deployed to the World Trade Center

on September 11 and searched tirelessly for people in the rubble.

Merlyn and his handler Matt Claussen were deployed to Ground Zero on September 24,

working the night shift for five days.

Moxie, 13, from Winthrop, Massachusetts, arrived with her handler, Mark Aliberti,

at the World Trade Center on the evening of September 11 and searched the site for eight days.

Red, 11, from Annapolis, Maryland, went with Heather Roche to the Pentagon

from September 16 until the 27 as part of the Bay Area Recovery Canines.

Tara, 16, from Ipswich, Massachusetts, arrived at the World Trade Center on the night of the 11th.

The dog and her handler Lee Prentiss were there for eight days.

Scout and another unknown dog lie among the rubble at Ground Zero,

just two of nearly 100 search and rescue animals who helped to search for survivors.

During the chaos of the 9/11 attacks, where almost 3,000 people died, nearly 100 loyal search and rescue dogs and their brave owners scoured Ground Zero for survivors. Now, ten years on, just 13 of these heroic canines survive, and they have been commemorated in a touching series of portraits entitled Retrieved. The dogs worked tirelessly to search for anyone trapped alive in the rubble, along with countless emergency service workers and members of the public.

Traveling across nine states in the U.S. from Texas to Maryland, Dutch photographer Charlotte Dumas, 34, captured the remaining dogs in their twilight years in their homes where they still live with their handlers, a full decade on from 9/11. Their stories have now been compiled in a book, called Retrieved, which was published on the tenth anniversary of the attacks. Noted for her touching portraits of animals, especially dogs, Charlotte wanted Retrieved to mark not only the anniversary of the September 2001 attacks, but also as recognition for some of the first responders and their dogs.

"I felt this was a turning point, especially for the dogs, who although are not forgotten, are not as prominent as the human stories involved," explained Charlotte, who splits her time between New York and Amsterdam. "They speak to us as a different species, and animals are greatly important for our sense of empathy and to put things into perspective."
